as an artist living on the rock….its no big deal to go out there a perform, you’re not signing a contract, just go out a rep….its an opportunity to show what u can do, and get some practice in front of an audience.

I have to comment. This IS a SCAM, it would have been a simple opportunity to perform if people hadn’t spent money to audition, it wouldn’t have been a scam if people weren’t told that Major Record Label execs. were coming here to see these performances, This was advertised as an opportunity to be heard by these labels, not a concert, I’m one of … See Morethe artists that was there when it started, i did sound check and everything, just like the others…..but i’m not gonna just go out and perform b/c there’s an audience, that’s not what this is about, Bahamian hopefuls spent money to audition b/c they were fed a bogus dream, people flew in to see the performances and aren’t who they said they were…and that’s not a SCAM, these guys were out on a boat talking about the money they made from auditions and this is NOT a SCAM? are you kidding me?…..there will be many more opportunities for our local artists to perform for our local audiences, they shouldn’t have to subject themselves to being belittled in order to get an opportunity to perform….UNACCEPTABLE…this is MY opinion, share it if you will, if not…that’s on you. I’m not performing nor attending….do what you will. I did and will continue to do my part standing up for our 242 artists…

honestly, i am not in nassau to hear the ads and to hear the angle it was advertised in, so sammi if you say it was advertised as a meet and greet with exec’s looking to sign, then i too would be upset if it turned out to not be so – but from the looks of the flyer, which is all i have to go on, since again, i am not there to hear the ads or … See Moreanything, the flyer uses less than 8% of it’s wording and imagery on the fact that label mates would be there… in fact, it looks like it’s a talent show hosted with dj fines FIRST, and as a side note, there will be label mates there… so, judging from that, i don’t see how paying to get on the talent show is a bad thing – in fact, i dont know of any talent show anywhere, where you dont pay to register, audition or not, you always pay to register — now if all that paid didn’t make the cut, any deposit is always considered non-refundable… there aren’t any laws being broken here – having said all of that, yes, any opportunity is an opportunity. Sammi I would’ve honestly never expected you to be there in the first place, you are an artist who has had hit songs on air in excess of 40 weeks, your face is on the side of busses, you’re face is in the phone book, you have your own reality series on a local television station… come on… this isn’t your opportunity at all. But for the up and coming acts that are trying to break into artistry, i say go for it. what’s to lose. 50 dollars? that’s it? come on…

@Sasha … agree bro … great turnout and it was what it was ( a venue for some artist to get on a big stage, and do what they do ) … forget about Wes Side ENT. … shoutOuts to my boy RANDY C …for doing it all for Bahamian Artist to have a chance to shine (bigger picture) … RANDY we are forever indebted to you, you have made the music industry here something tangible, and have put us on our way to having an industry that is financial sustainable …. This comes to my phone so i’m up early seeing this. This was NOT about Randy C and what he does for our music industry, everyone, Especially ME, knows what he has done. Randy C didn’t put this showcase together, he was merely used to advertise it and wasn’t aware that what was advertised was NOT actually what was going to happen. This was also not about taking advantage of opportunities to show your talent. This was the process that obviously the majority of Bahamians that were there, DIDNT know about. I’m sure if it was known what really happened, i’d like to believe it would have been a bad day for the promoter. It now seems like this was a simple concert, like Heineken Green Synergy. It WASNT. If you as an artist would pay money to audition to perform in front of RECORD LABEL EXECS in the hopes of being signed, only to find out that they were never coming and still go out and do it, it means that someone lied to you and took advantage of your dream in order to make money and you allowed it, here, in The Bahamas. Now its like you said “oh well, they lied to me and took my money and I get nothing, but hey the rain forest theatre is a big stage, lets go perform cuz alot of people in the audience”….then to me it seems like you’d allow your standards to be horribly compromised just to perform…..That’s not the best look….

i have read everyone’s comments and i didnt speak on this and wasn’t sure I wanted too..but now I will. First of all the talent show is good ONLY to allow new artist a chance to express their talent in front of audience period which is all well and fine. Now this whole thing bout bringing scouts down to to get these virtually unknown artist signed … See Moreis really BS cuz the music industry really don’t work like that anymore. Scouts only signing or having interest in artist that have made a HUGE impact in their country or region so for them to go to talent show here really is a waste of their time. I lived in tampa 7 years and I went to these type of shows rarely do anyone get a record deal from it. The best advice I could give these 242 artists is if you did perform at these shows and one of these “a&r” guys felt they had some interest you should have a demo tape on you at all times…but don’t get overly excited cuz alot of them like to sell you dreams…to get to the next level in this music biz if you doing hip hop or rnb you need to leave this rock…I heavily believe in that!

Firstly I’d like to say good morning to my fellow mzpaparazzi242 faithful. I’ve been lurking in the shadows for a while now, and even though I’ve lived in New Jersey for almost 9 years, I read this blog before I read THEYBF or BOSSIP. I just HAD to get this off my chest.

Sammi, you are right but a lot of people don’t understand WHY. We were both raised in north Andros, went to the same school, taught by parents that instilled unequivocal self respect and determination and drive in us. We are older now, wiser now but that foundation is still there. Unfortunately, some people will not heed warnings because of the infamous “black crab syndrome”. You have paid your dues, but because your reputation recedes you and no matter how they gloss it the only thing that will run across the “youngins” mind is that you’re trying to get on over on them, even when you speak the truth.

“When you don listen, you ga feel.” Its so old, but so sad and so true. What really gets my goat is that so many brilliant young Bahamian minds are being sold a pipe dream by these blood suckers. HOW can you sleep and night knowing that you ripped off people’s children half of which had to probably scrimp and save that $50.00? Do you hold your Bible with the same hands you count your dirty money with. If you want to put on a talent competition for new artists, DO SO ADVERTISE IT as so! BUT DO NOT LIE! Sometimes I wish the Bahamas was as litigious as the US; ONE good false advertisement/fraud lawsuit would stop PLENTY.

But what are we gonna do, people are such sheep sometimes…you spend a year growing in your wool, only to let somebody else come sheer you and leave you butt necked right back where you were last year.

I’m sorry about the rant, I’m just beyond words after hearing about the utter foolishness that went down last night

People are mad because the show was FASLE advertising and that really hurt people especally those who spoent they money. This is the second time that Wes did this shit. and he should not be allowed to get away with it. Each of those artist need to be given there monies back along with interest.

i see where both sides are coming from and agree that no 1 want to loose money … but i think more education needs to be done to inform bahamian artist of the way the industry works ….

Although the A&R model is now a dying process it still works sometimes …. these guys dont work directly for the labels , but they have the ear of important people at the labels who can POSSIBLY make things happen ! … NOT defending Wes in any way cuz i think that shud have been brought to light ,,,, but then again this is something ppl in involved in the industry shud know.

the world has gone digital and networking online is the FUTURE so the new way record labels here your music is via online portals … so def i think education on how to get your music out digitally shud be first on any artist in the county’s agenda …. I’ve BEEN saying education is needed, however who’se responsibility is it to educate? No one but your own. Don’t blame the public, they paid good money to see a good show. Don’t blame the artists, they paid to register in a talent show. I said this in my previous post – NOTHING wrong with paying to get on a TALENT show. That’s the way it works – Don’t blame the scouts, i’m sure they were simply doing what they were asked to do – BE THERE. You can blame the promoter if you want, but he has done nothing illegal. Scouts were there, so technically yes, it is an OPPORTUNITY to get signed. Promising a record deal tho, at the end of a 3 hour venue, to a stranger, is like promising sex at the end of a night at the movies, to a stranger. Sounds REAL GOOD on paper! But will it really happen? LOL…

I think i’ve said what I gotta say on this subject – Thanks Reka for your internet prowess, and putting this, and many other subjects out to light to be discussed.

Ultimately, just like the lil’ wayne concert debacle, Bahamian Artists who have given their absolute all will always feel threatened, manipulated, belittled and punished every so often… I salute every single accomplished artist, for they are the ones handling this emotional burden in stride, something I can never do – which is why i’m not an artist any longer. I prefer behind the scenes….

Agree with some, Hulk when he’s angry can’t differentiate allies and enemies plus he like to destroy properties wherever he made his appearance… Same with me, i like Hulk but if compare with Iron Man or Spiderman, i prefer IronMan and Spiderman… Hulk has brute force, but other superheroes has a personality that makes them popular..
