“Ya will starve for this music if you really love it.”
.
Soulful Reggae songstress–Tessanne Chin recently spoke on her music, her album, the industry and it’s faults and more in an interview with MzPapz and the cast of Fame Fridays on 102.9 Island FM.
.
Tessanne is the fresh soulful voice of a new generation of Jamaican musical talent. Her sultry fusion of Dancehall and Reggae with edgy rock riffs mixed with the honest, heart felt and conscious lyrics she pens herself create a musical style that is uniquely her own.
.
On her being the founder of Reggae Fusion:
I think for me I just kind of interperted it along with the producers to be more fitting for where we are today, but it’s just that I love it so much. I don’t think we should be afraid of being apart of the evolution of music and not be afraid to step out of our comfort zone, but I don’t think I’m the founder [LOL]. I’m one of the children of it.
.
Her exceptional vocal talent and her exotic looks give her unmistakable stage appeal. At the age of 24, Tessanne has already opened on stage for such musical greats as Patti Labelle, Gladys Knight, Peabo Bryson and Roberta Flack., Atlantic Star, Boyz 2 men, Keyshia Cole Damian Marley, Ky-Mani Marley, Air Supply, Mary J Blige and Neyo amongst many others. She also toured the world as a backup singer with the Reggae Legend Jimmy Cliff for three years and has collaborated with artists such as Ky-Mani Marley, Diana King, Wayne Marshall Peter Morgan (of Morgan’s Heritage) her Sister Tami Chynn, and was one of the featured artists on the Saggy and Friends “Save a Life” video and song in aide of the Bustamante Children’s Hospital.
.
On where her music is right now:
We just released the album, actually my first album. I know alot of people were like, “why did it take so long,” but I’m very proud to say that we did it indepndently and it was my way of saying I wanted a little piece of me out there that I didn’t have to compromise with.
.
.
On how long it actually took to complete the album:
Well for me it took like 5, 4 years to be honest, to be completely honest. You know I have no shame in saying that because I think the first album is one of the most important and I’ve heard people say before it takes like ten years to put out a first album and then the record company expects you to put another one out in 9 months and it takes time. Good music takes time!
On her single status:
I just got married!
On marriage:
I think a woman have to look god for her husband. I ain’t gonna be one of those woman that get married and be like okay that’s it. No!
